Bliss Products and Services (BPS) Project Overview
Chesapeake City Hall Covered Bridge – Chesapeake, Virginia
Project Background
The City of Chesapeake faced an ongoing safety issue at their main municipal complex. A wooden pedestrian bridge — over 20 years old — served as the primary route from the parking area to Chesapeake City Hall. While nestled in a beautiful, tree-lined area, the dense canopy often left the bridge surface wet and hazardous, creating a persistent risk for slips and falls.
Design Challenge
Several previous attempts to mitigate the slick conditions proved ineffective. The natural beauty of the area couldn’t be sacrificed, but the city needed a durable, low-maintenance solution that would improve safety without disrupting the aesthetics of the site. The final solution also needed to complement recent upgrades, including new Cedar Forest Products (CFP) shelters installed elsewhere in the complex.
The Bliss Products and Services Solution
Bliss Products and Services, Inc. was selected to design and build a new covered pedestrian bridge. The new structure features:
- Custom 8′ x 40′ covered bridge design
- Green metal roofing to visually align with CFP shelters
- Slip-resistant walking surfaces for all-weather safety
- Natural design that fits the wooded environment
Outcome
The completed covered bridge now offers a safe, attractive, and functional pathway between the City Hall parking area and government offices. It stands as an example of thoughtful infrastructure — combining aesthetics, safety, and durability — and highlights Bliss Products and Services’ ongoing commitment to community-focused design solutions.
