Bliss Products and Services (BPS) Playground Project Overview
Walker Rocks Park – Walker County, Rock Spring, GA

Project Inception and Development

In an effort to create a truly inclusive space for children of all abilities, Walker County embarked on a transformative playground project at Walker Rocks Park, located on the Walker County Civic Center campus. With a vision to align the design with the county’s natural recreational attractions, the playground features innovative equipment that blends seamlessly into the scenic beauty of Rocktown.

The project’s completion represents an investment of $406,519, with funding provided primarily by voter-approved SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) and the county’s tourism product development fund. Walker County’s dedication to enhancing community spaces ensures that children from all backgrounds have a safe, welcoming environment to explore and enjoy.

Bliss Products and Services (BPS), represented by Adam Schmansky in Georgia, played a key role in this project, offering consultation and high-quality playground equipment to meet the county’s ambitious goals of inclusivity, safety, and fun.

Design and Features

The playground at Walker Rocks Park stands as a model for inclusive design, featuring equipment and play elements that serve the physical, social-emotional, sensory, cognitive, and communicative needs of all children, including those with disabilities. The playground includes traditional components like slides and merry-go-rounds, while integrating unique climbing features inspired by Walker County’s outdoor attractions.

A poured-in-place rubberized surface and ramps with barriers have been incorporated to ensure accessibility for all children, including those with mobility challenges. The equipment encourages active play and social interaction, creating a space where children of all abilities can play and grow together.

National Demonstration Site Designation

Walker Rocks Park received recognition from PlayCore’s Center for Outreach, Research and Education (CORE) as a National Demonstration Site®, aligning with best practices in inclusive play. This prestigious designation acknowledges the playground’s thoughtful, evidence-based design that promotes accessibility and community engagement.

As a National Demonstration Site, Walker Rocks Park will contribute to ongoing research on inclusive playgrounds. Data collected from visitors will provide insights into how these spaces enhance overall community vitality.

Future Expansion and Community Engagement

Although the playground has just opened, plans for future expansion are already in motion. Walker County is actively seeking additional grant funding to introduce swings, a zipline, and other play features, further enhancing the park’s appeal and usability.

This project represents a significant milestone in Walker County’s commitment to creating inclusive public spaces where individuals of all ages and abilities can come together, play, and build lasting memories.
