National Children’s Day this year is especially important. Those youngsters in our lives have certainly had their lives turned up-side down with stay at home orders and the fear of the COVID pandemic. Unable to attend school and see friends they have in many cases been relegated to amusing themselves and staying busy while the adults around them often have to work from home.
Today, use this day to honor the children in your lives. Take the time to slow down, fast paced lives by turning off the technology and using today to reconnect with your children and perhaps use this as an opportunity to assess and redirect your family’s lives and focus.
Sure one day might not be enough to accomplish such an important step in a child’s life but it is great start to make sure they feel cherished, loved and appreciated.
You might start by discussing the origins and importance of this day and how that even in our modern world today, there still many children who are exploited around the world – some unfortunately, even in our own country. Our children are so lucky to grow up in a country where children are cherished, and allowed access to rightful education and that they are protected from working long hours in dangerous circumstances. It wasn’t always this way and children’s rights have come a long way. Today we celebrate the importance of a healthy childhood and how we need to protect the rights and freedoms of children in order to ensure that they can grow into happy, healthy adults.
Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard of the Universalist Church of the Redeemer in Chelsea, Massachusetts started Children’s Day in 1856 as a special day to Baptize children. This day was originally named ‘Rose Day’. In 1995, the then President, Clinton proclaimed National Children’s Day as October 8th. This was followed by President Bush in 2001 who declared the first Sunday in June as National Child’s Day. However, even though there are seemly two National child’s / Children’s Days, it is generally celebrated on the second Sunday in June rather than October 8th.
As this day is about children, why not start the day with an outdoor trip, perhaps a field trip to one of our Nations Great Outdoors Parks. You could go out to a local nature space and enjoy a picnic, perhaps fly a kite or maybe take a hike. It might be even better to take the younger members of the family to the local playground and meet up with their friends for a play date.
