Many elders play important roles in our families from babysitting the very young to shuffling older children around all the while teaching and counselling other family members. Other elders may be beyond helping the family because of mobility or age issues and simply need our love and appreciation for all they did do in the past.
August 21st is at least one day out of the year you can choose to show love and appreciation to the elders in your life to celebrate National Senior Citizens Day. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation declaring this holiday, which honors adults over the age of 60 and today with the advent of improved healthcare many senior citizens are remaining increasingly active well into old age, often beginning second careers later in life and pursuing passions in the creative arts or other business endeavours.
Reagan said it best when he proclaimed. “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older — places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.”
