Jim Carruthers - Bliss Products and Services Playground & Outdoor Equipment Sales Rep. Sarasota / Ft. Myers, Florida

Anchored in Southwest Florida - At the Helm of Community Projects for Over Two Decades

I’m Jim Carruthers, and for more than 20 years I’ve been helping communities across Southwest Florida – from Sarasota to Fort Myers and beyond – create outdoor spaces that are safe, inviting, and built to last. I started with Bliss Products and Services in 2001, bringing with me years of experience navigating busy harbors as a licensed 100-ton yacht captain and dinner boat captain in New York and Boston. During that time, I captained yachts and led crews – developing the same project management and people skills I now use to keep complex jobs running smoothly on land.

💡 Fun Fact: Before trading waves for playgrounds, I captained yachts and dinner boats in two of America’s busiest harbors.  That same steady-hand approach now guides every project I work on – keeping things on course from first conversation to final installation.

When you work with me, you’re not just getting a proposal – you’re getting someone who knows this region inside and out.  I can help you:

  • Pick equipment that actually fits your space, your budget, and how people here will use it.

  • Make sure everything meets ADA requirements so it’s welcoming for everyone.

  • Plan with our coastal weather in mind – from hurricane-rated shelters to surfacing that stays cooler under the Florida sun.

  • Keep things on track from the first conversation to the ribbon cutting.

Because I live and work right here in Southwest Florida, I understand the challenges and opportunities our communities face – from salt air and summer storms to busy public spaces that see year-round use.  That local knowledge shapes every recommendation I make, so your project not only looks great on day one but performs reliably for years.

I’m Jim Carruthers, helping communities from Sarasota to Fort Myers create outdoor spaces that last.  I’ve been with Bliss Products and Services since 2001, after years as a licensed 100-ton yacht captain in New York and Boston.  Those years at the helm taught me how to lead crews and manage complex jobs –  skills I now bring to every project on land.

Because I live here, I understand Southwest Florida’s climate and communities.  From hurricane-rated shelters to sun-safe surfacing, I recommend what works and what lasts.  I stay involved on-site, checking details, talking with crews, and keeping things on course.

Voices from the Gulf Coast

Southwest Florida clients share their experiences working with Jim.

Every project tells a story – not just in the finished space, but in the experience of getting there.  Here’s what schools, parks departments, and community organizations across Southwest Florida – from Sarasota and Fort Myers to Naples and beyond – have said about working with me and Bliss Products and Services.  From new playground installations in coastal communities to park upgrades in growing neighborhoods, these testimonials reflect the trust and results that come from local experience and hands-on support. Because many organizations limit named testimonials, these short notes reflect the typical close-out comments we’re allowed to share. If you need named references, I can provide them on request through the proper channels.

“Jim made a complex park upgrade feel simple. He laid out clear choices, kept pricing transparent, and delivered exactly what we approved on the timeline we set.”

“Submittals, specs, and procurement steps were handled quickly and cleanly with Bliss Products and Services. Our council sign-off was the smoothest it has been in years.”

“He knows the Gulf climate. Jim guided us to materials that handle salt air and heavy sun, and our maintenance team has had very little to worry about.”

“Jim phased the work around our school calendar and kept safety front and center. Students were back on new equipment the week we planned, with no surprises.”

“Communication was excellent from kickoff to closeout. Jim coordinated installers, checked site details in person, and resolved small items before they became issues.”

“Shade placement, surfacing, and access were thought through for families and ADA needs. Jim’s plan reads like a roadmap our staff can maintain for years.”

“After the ribbon cutting, Jim stayed responsive. Replacement parts, warranty questions, and tips for care were answered fast through Bliss Products and Services.”

Hearing from the people I work with is one of the best parts of my job.  These stories remind me why I do what I do – helping Southwest Florida communities create spaces that feel like home.  Whether it’s a playground in Sarasota, a park upgrade in Naples, or a new shelter in Fort Myers, I’m ready to help your next project set sail toward success.

Recent Projects Making a Difference in Southwest Florida

A look at my latest parks, playgrounds, and community spaces - all built with durability, safety, and local needs in mind.

I’m fortunate to work on projects that truly shape the communities I call home. From coastal parks and shaded playgrounds to neighborhood gathering spaces, each one is the result of close collaboration with local schools, parks departments, and community groups. These projects reflect the unique needs of Southwest Florida, withstand our climate, and create spaces people can enjoy for years to come.

Oasis Elementary School North & South – Cape Coral, FL

When the Oasis Charter School System decided it was time to upgrade the playgrounds at both Oasis Elementary North and South, they wanted spaces that were safe, fun, and built to handle years of Florida sun and storms. Bliss Products and Services was brought in to make it happen — and I was lucky enough to be part of the process.

Project Details

In February 2025, the City of Cape Coral Charter School Authority approved the full replacement of both playgrounds, with Bliss Products and Services as the supplier. We worked under a piggyback contract with Manatee Schools to streamline the process and get the right equipment in place quickly. At Oasis Elementary North, the project value came in at $228,120.20 – a big investment in making sure the youngest students have safe, modern equipment to enjoy every day.

What I liked most about this project was knowing that these upgrades will be used by hundreds of kids every week – not just now, but for years to come. From the equipment choices to the layout, everything was designed with safety, accessibility, and play value in mind.

It’s a great example of what’s possible when a school community, local government, and the right partners come together to create something special for kids.

No two projects are ever quite the same – and that’s one of the things I enjoy most about this work.  Whether you’re just starting to sketch ideas or already have a clear direction, I’m happy to help you think it through and find the right fit for your space.  I’ll share what’s worked well in other Florida communities, walk you through the details, and make sure you feel confident moving forward.  Big or small, if you’ve got a project on the horizon, I’d love to be part of it.

From Funding to Finished Project

Helping communities secure grants for parks, playgrounds, and recreation areas built to last.

Accessing the right funding can help make Southwest Florida playgrounds, parks, and shade structure projects possible. This section shares information on community park funding opportunities, school playground grants, and other programs designed to support outdoor spaces built for our climate. By exploring these resources early in the planning process, communities can better prepare for project costs, timelines, and the steps needed to bring safe, durable, and inclusive spaces to life.

State & Federal Grants

From Collier to Sarasota, there are a variety of state and federal programs that can help fund outdoor projects like playgrounds, shade structures, and park amenities. Knowing where to look — and starting early — can help communities in Southwest Florida prepare for eligibility requirements, timelines, and budget planning.

Proposal & Application Strategy

A strong application can make the difference in securing funding. By understanding what funders look for and how to present a project’s local impact, schools, parks, and municipalities can better position their proposals for success. Planning ahead ensures each requirement is met and the project vision comes through clearly.

Local Gov, School Partnerships

Communities across Lee, Charlotte, and Manatee Counties often benefit from creative funding partnerships. These can include grant-backed ADA upgrades, shared-use school facilities, or joint park improvements. Exploring partnership opportunities can help align resources, meet community goals, and create long-term value.

Curious How Playground Grants Make a Difference Here in Southwest Florida?

I’ve seen how grant funding can help turn ideas into real spaces for kids and families – from shaded playgrounds in Sarasota to park upgrades in Collier and Lee Counties. The examples below show how schools, churches, and community groups have transformed their plans into safe, durable, and welcoming outdoor areas with the help of funding programs.

Oasis Elementary School North – North Fort Myers, FL

This shaded playground came together with the help of the Healthy Kids Initiative Grant and our friends at Play & Park Structures.  Working with local leaders, we created a fun, durable, and inclusive play space designed for Florida’s weather and the community’s needs. In my Sarasota / Fort Myers territory, it now offers modern equipment that keeps kids active, safe, and smiling all year long.

Grants aren’t just about funding – they’re about giving communities the opportunity to create spaces that bring people together. From Collier to DeSoto County, the right support can help schools, parks, and local groups turn plans into safe, durable, and welcoming outdoor areas. Exploring available programs early can make the journey smoother and help ensure every project is ready to succeed.
